Meet our new car

Meet Řak, short for Antonín Dvořák. (Thus kinda pronounced like the French "Jacques" (though, to be more correct, as I'm sure my Czech-speaking aunt can confirm, it has some 'r' right at the beginning) and not the English "rack")
Now meet his step brother, Jean-Claude Dimpleston the 15th Earl of Wigglebottom. How he came to such a ...'noble' title, he doesn't like to tell. All we know for sure is that he was an adorable baby :).

Jean-Claude is the rental car that brought Řak to us--or more accurately, us to Řak.
Now how an American car(Ford) with a Spanish designation(Fiesta) and a French name(Jean-Claude...) came to be rented from a German bookbinder to an American(me) and a Canadian(F) in order to pick up a Czech car(Škoda Fabia) from his German adoptive parent(previous owner--i.e. a German Doctor)--well, that's anybody's guess!

Either way, we'll tell you a joke about Škodas--and then reassure you it's no longer true/accurate.

Transcript: (in a Russian/Czech? accent) "Can you drive Škoda 100 kilometers per hour on Russian highway?"
"Yes. Once."
This used to be Škoda's reputation. Luckily they've been using German VW parts for 16 years now, so our 10-year-old Řak has made the cut. Isn't he cute?

And he's been well taken care of. Just one previous owner, had regular inspections and repairs, powerful motor :), shifts well (yup, we've got a standard!) and all around solid car. Our mechanic found it for us and we could trade in our old car for this one. For the car nuts among you, he's a 2005 Škoda Fabia 1.9 TDI (+ for the non-car-nuts, that means 'diesel').

(And yes, sadly Freyja is no longer with us.
As you can see, she has returned to her heavenly realm. (Nordic tradition says Freyja often rode a carriage drawn by cats :) Thanks Dad, for the photoshop hack :) )
She was an old, spunky car..but near the end had a little more spunk (and clunk) than was good for us. During the past year, she has looked like this a few too many times:
Notice lack of motor, wheels,...lack of everything...
Farewell, dear Freyja!)
