Report from India, Part 2 FOOOOD!

Oh, the food, the food, the food.
I have loved Indian food for as long as I can remember. F is a more recent convert (I'm so glad!) and he's enjoying it there (and told me I'd be enjoying it there too :) )

Here he is eating in a restaurant, as the only tall, white guy (see Part 1)
Here are some things he's eaten:
Like a good Indian, eating with his (right) hand

  • A: Curd (served at every meal at the hostel :) )
  • B: Cream of Wheat (sweet)
  • C: Joghurt and other stuff...sauce
  • D: A spicy soup, to drink
  • E: Salt
  • F: Seasoning (not sure exactly what was in it)
  • G: Dahl (made of lentils, also served at every meal...)
  • H: Soupy, tomato based curry
  • I: Cooked vegetables
  • J: Puri (fried...)
  • K: Ta da! Here's something you all recoginzed correctly--RICE!

  • And also 'Indian' flavor pizza from Dominos Pizza (because of course they are the ones in India...). Here's his report:

    • Dough and Sauce taste like US Dominos.
    • Green and red chillies (spicy), paneer (cheese), corn, onions
    • Condiments: Crushed red pepper, Seasoning mix (salt, garlic, pepper, oregano, basil, chilly [sic])

    Teehee, India
    (I'm so excited!!!)

p.s. I apparently forgot to mention WHY he is there :) Oops! It's for his Master's Thesis. His university is beginning a cooperation with an Indian university in Agra in the Humanities Department. They already have a cooperation in the hard sciences, but he gets to be the humanities guinea pig :)

He read a book, "Sea of Poppies" written by an Indian (Amitav Ghosh), about India prior to the Opium Wars. He has done a ton of research on various topics and discovered that, that which seemed strange, makes perfect sense in Indian culture and that, that which seemed acceptable, is entirely unacceptable in Indian culture. Go figure :)

Now in India he gets to talk with Indians and with his co-mentoring professor. So far they've been confirming what he's read.

AND in a week I get to join him during Fall Break! Hooray!
