Germans love their food expressions, Part 4: Fruits + Veggies

Doesn't this look like a band cover? (The pepper on the far right is the moody drummer :-P )
Now on to fruits and vegetables! (+ food pictures from my mission in Frankfurt for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints :) )
A group lunch with other sister missionaries in Frankfurt
1. This is another fairly famous one:
  • Jetzt haben wir den Salat
"Now we have the salad"
= "Well now we've got this (tricky) situation" with the implied "And how are we going to deal with/get out of it?" and maybe even an "I told you so" as well :)
2. Now for some more expressions from the garden
  • Kraut und Rüben
"weeds/cabbage and tubers"
= chaos; you can use this expression to describe someone's messy room (or the top of my desk....); "Kraut" can be like in "Sauerkraut" (sour white cabbage) or as in "Unkraut" (weeds)
Potatoes are tubers! (+ holding our candles for the 4th of July)
3. And another tuber...
  • die Rübe
"tuber"
= a slang term for your head
Okay, there are no tubers involved here...although peanuts are at least legumes!
(And yes, that's us eating PB+J on Turkish bread)
4. And cabbage again...
  • Kohldampf haben
"to have cabbage steam"
= to be really hungry/have a ravenous appetite; "Kohl" is another word for cabbage
Our soup with "Blumenkohl" ("flower cabbage" or cauliflower)
5. Okay, here's another verb :)
  • abgrasen
"to graze (something) up"
= to make it flat, like sheep grazing the grass down to the nubbins
Our fridge during our healthy kick :)
(yes, we had another sort as well...(see the fridge picture in the Dairy post))
6. Now for some pears
  • die Glühbirne
"glowing pear"
= lightbulb (makes sense, if you think about it :) )
Pear? Nope, a banana, when my mission companion was dressed like one
7. pear #2
  • Nichts in der Birne haben
"to have nothing in the pear"
= here we have another slang term for your head, in this case the phrase means 'to have nothing in your head/brain'...(not particularly nice...)
Our jam had plums, grapes and banana in it, but no pears :)
8. And beans...
  • eine Bohnenstange sein
"to be a beanpole"
= to be quite thin, like unto a beanpole
... Blackberries also start with "B"... I found these near the busstop :)
9. And lastly for the techies, like my father-in-law

  • der Kabelsalat
"cable salad"
=a mess of cables/cords; this is something that drives my father-in-law crazy, so he prefers to avoid it by making everything orderly :)
and now, cracker night! ...no fruits or veggies were involved in this eating activity.
